Debut win for Sandell in the Capital

Patrik Sandell claimed his first Red Bull Global Rallycross win in Washington DC last weekend ahead of Nelson Piquet Jr. and Joni Wiman in what was a strong event for Ford.

Sandell had been on the pace all weekend, finishing in the top two in all of his heat races on his way to the final. He led every lap of the 10 lap finale to ensure that he took his first victory ahead of ex-F1 star Nelson Piquet Jr..

Sandell's team mate Joni Wiman finally delivered on the promise he'd shown in the first two events of the season to take the first podium finish of his career in Supercars. Wiman's weekend could've ended up very different for the Finn.

Despite jumping the start in his semi final, he fought engine issues to finish third. An administration error with his penalty meant that he would be part of an unusual 11 car final, with Ken Block advancing despite missing out on the top 3 in his heat. New Zealand's Emma Gilmour the unfortunate driver not to make it.

Steve Arpin made it four Fords in the top four whilst the Andretti Volkswagen pair of Tanner Foust ended up fifth and sixth after a trying weekend which saw engine issues and a catalogue of other issues for both drivers.

Ken Block was next up in seventh after a quiet weekend for the Californian. Austin Dyne, Rhys Millen and Sverre Isachsen completed the top ten.

Bucky Lasek dropped back to 11th late on after differential issues left him battling with his Subaru stuck with only rear wheel drive.

Next up for the Red Bull Global Rallycross series is New York City in just under four weeks' time.
