Three new events join longer IndyCar calendar

Phoenix, Road America and Boston will join the IndyCar schedule next year in a calender five weeks longer than the controversial 2015 season which concluded in August.

Phoenix, which hasn't hosted a top-level open wheel race since 1995, will replace the Indianapolis 500 as the first oval race of the season. The Arizona event will host the second event of the season, just under three weeks after the traditional season opener in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The month of May activities begin on May 14 with the third Grand Prix of Indianapolis before the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29.

Road America will make it's long awaited return on June 26, concluding a busy month which will see the Dual in Detroit and Texas races taking place in the preceding weeks.

Boston will hold a street race for the first time on September 4 before the season once again concludes in Sonoma, California.

Missing from next year's calendar will be races in Milwaukee, Fontana and New Orleans - which falls off the calendar after just one year following a disappointing forst IndyCar race at NOLA Motorsports Park in April.
